Media Server Review - Alienware High Definition (HD – 1080p) Server Packs 4TB Storage

Alienware’s High Definition (1080p eg. Blu-ray Disc) Media Server packs a large 4TB (4,000 Gb) of memory for central storage for all types of digital content (eg. movies, music and images) for wireless streaming and sharing with home entertainment systems and other compatible media devices.

Alienware HD Media Server

Storage is provided by four hard drives which are hot swappable (front panel access) and in a standard RAID 5 configuration. Upgrading or swapping hard disc drives is a simple matter of pulling one drive out and pushing another in. The Alienware HD server handles all the configuration work automatically.

Other notable features include:

  • Powered by a powerful Intel Core 2 Quad processor
  • Automated backup of stored media
  • High-Definition Digital Video Recorder for recording and playing back your HD content (up to 1080p) via an HDMI output
  • Blu-ray disc compatible read + write optical drive able to store up to 50GB
  • Ability to function as a personal video recorder, recording up to four high definition programs from different sources at the same time
  • Up to 4 TV Tuners
  • Internal Cable Card port (OCUR)
  • 7.1 Optical Audio output (Toslink)
  • Dolby Digital 7.1 pre-amp output, with digital audio out (Coaxial and Optical)
  • Ability to be rack mounted
  • Remote file access for those who want to travel without their storage devices

As it is the basis of the digital home of tomorrow, the Alienware High Definition Server is not inexpensive and has been initially targeted at custom home installations with setup by experienced professionals.

For those looking for a central repository for their digital media assets and a media server might like to look at the HP Media Center.
