LaCie Rugged Hard Drive 500GB 320GB, 250GB with USB2.0, FireWire400, FireWire800 plus 8MB Cache Review

When you think about it, if your external hard drive is going to be continually dragged around with you then the chances of an accidental drop are much higher compared to those that live the common sedentary, desktop life. Why take a risk of having to rely on successful data recovery if you can buy a rugged external hard drive able to take some knocks?

LaCie Rugged Hard Drive

The LaCie Rugged’s shell is an aluminium alloy and surrounds the hard drive mounted on four independent suspensions. The Rugged’s shell is surrounded by a shock absorbing bumper. Combined these measures give the LaCie Rugged the ability to survive a table high drop (35 in - 900 mm in non-operating mode). If you do happen to drop the drive you shouldn’t have any trouble finding it with the bumper being an attractive but, bright safety orange.

Another bonus for the traveler is that the LaCie Rugged is powered by the FireWire or USB connection – there is no need to transport a power adapter as well. The LaCie Rugged actually has a triple interface - FW800, FW400 and USB2.0.

The LaCie doesn’t require any drivers for either Windows 2000/XP or Mac OS X. Conveniently the LaCie Rugged come with 1-Click Backup Software for PC/Mac and full-featured SilverKeeper Backup Software for Mac OS 9.x/10.x.

The full range of triple interface LaCie Rugged Hard Drive capacities available are 500GB 320GB, 250GB, 200GB, 160GB. You can also get a LaCie Rugged with a single Hi-Speed USB 2.0 interface in 160GB, 250GB, 320GB and 500GB models.
