MediaFire is a free, unlimited online storage site for sharing files and images. PC Magazine included it in their last Top 100 New Sites list.

MediaFire list the main features of their online file and image storage service as:

• Files and image sharing with friends or colleagues;
• Unlimited file (up to 100MB in size) uploading;
• Use of folders to share groups of files or create image galleries;
• Registration is voluntary with all features available if you are registered or not;
• No software needs to be installed on your PC;
• Easy access from any Internet connected computer to your files stored online.
• Links to files can be created from your MySpace page, your blog, or forums (this can be a big bandwidth and dollar saving for your website)

MediaFire provides privacy tools for keeping some files hidden as private and other files visible (in public) and downloadable. Passwords can be set for individual, sensitive files.

Overall MediaFire is a flexible and adaptable free file hosting system well worth investigating.

ADrive, a recently formed data storage and backup company, has added a new public file sharing feature allowing users to instantly share any files saved in their account with family, friends – anyone they decide upon. After uploading, clicking on a “share” button generates a unique URL enabling those who receive it to view or download that particular file. The process can be reversed simply using an “unshared” button. Naturally, all files which have not been designated as “share” files are protected from public access.

This sharing feature is obviously ideal for sharing large files such as videos or images if email attachment limits are too restrictive. File sharing links will also allow ADrive users to link and share their ADrive files from web pages, blogs, and social-networking sites such as Facebook or MySpace.

It would be prudent to assume that any share link emailed to others could be shared with others not originally intended to receive it. Unless one has absolutely no issues with anyone accessing a file, leaving files as shared for long periods of time is probably best avoided. Perhaps, ADrive will introduce a timeout on shared links so that one is covered for not remembering to “unshare” a file.

On their website Consonus have a sobering quote from a recent Gartner report which found that 93% of organizations that experience a significant data loss are out of business within five years. And it is in this sort of environmental awareness of the seriousness of data loss that Consonus Technologies has launched its fully automated, online, remote backup, monitoring and management service.

The iBackup solution has been developed to provide data security and availability independent of company size. The turn key service is focused on the day-to-day activities required to keep a customer’s important data protected and recoverable. This type of service provides a solution for companies to satisfy their own and regulatory requirements for data availability, retention and compliance. Challenges to doing this in-house include skilled resource retention, increasing backup system complexity and of course costs.

After an independent SAS70 audit by Grant Thornton, Consonus announced in February that they had received a Type I SAS certification of the integrity of their facilities and data hosting solutions.

IDrive offer 2GB of online backup space for free. Using the service involves downloading and installing the backup application. The software can be configured to automatically backup important files to a specified schedule. The software interface resembles Windows Explorer with the ability to drag and drop files to the online storage. Encryption to 128-bit SSL is available for transfers and storage. There is a web based view, search and restore of backed up data is provided. Multiple user accounts can be created from one administrative login.
