Western Digital My Book Studio Edition II Review

Western Digitals’s My Book Studio Edition II is identical to the recently reviewed WD My Book Studio Edition apart from;

  • being RAID enabled,
  • having a 2TB capacity model available and
  • being upgradeable by replacing the HDD (without any tools).

Western Digital My Book Studio Edition II

Like the Studio Edition this model is formatted for a Mac operating system. A 2TB external HDD storage unit is not that common. To give an idea of what this storage capacity means, consider that it is possible to store up to 571,000 photos, 150 hours of video or 500,000 songs.

The Studio Edition II external HDD can be configured for RAID 0 (striped) which gives a maximum capacity equal to the combined storage capacity of both drives. Also available is RAID 1 (mirrored) which favors data security and has a maximum storage capacity equal to that of one of the HDD.

Notably the Studio Edition II uses only WD’s GreenPower drives which use about 30 percent less energy than standard systems as they don’t need a cooling fan. I makes for a quieter desktop solutions as well.
