Linksys NSLU2 Storage Link for USB 2.0 Disk Drives Review

The Lynksys NSLU2 (Network Storage Link for USB 2.0 Disk Drives) is a Network Attached Storage device (NAS) for making hard disks (HDD) and USB flash drives (USB1.0/1.1/2.0) accessible over a network using the SMB protocol. It’s an inexpensive solution for network sharing of digital video, music and data files with the security of managed access by user name or group

The Lynksys NSLU2 includes an integrated file server for accessing and downloading stored files over the Internet using a web browser. Disk utilities including disk formatting, backup, and scandisk (scans drives for errors) are included. Conveniently, the NSLU2 will send an email message when a hard drive is nearly full, completely full, or has an error. The unit connects directly to a 10/100 Ethernet network with a network data transfer rate up to 200 Mbps.

The operating system for the Lynksys NSLU2 is a modified version of Linux. By default HDD are formatted in ext3 but can also be formatted in NTFS or FAT32 for Windows compatibility. The device’s web interface provides configuration of user and group permissions and networking options.

There are twin USB 2.0 ports for connecting two HDD. Onboard memory includes 32 MB of SDRAM and 8 MB of flash memory. Home office users should note that the NSLU2 is fanless and therefore silent.
