Seagate FreeAgent Go USB 2.0 | 500GB, 320GB and 250GB | Portable External HDD for Windows Review

The FreeAgent Go USB 2.0 is preformatted for Windows and preloaded with Seagate Manager for automatic Plug-n-Play installation. For those with a Mac, there is a Seagate FreeAgent Go for Mac. The FreeAgent Go is a portable external HDD (5400 rpm) storage solution for your photos, music videos and personal digital documents. Backing up is a much more favourable alternative to hard drive data recovery.

Seagate FreeAgent Go USB 2.0

Being compact and portable the FreeAgent Go can be used by those on the move to save personal settings and data (such as favorites, passwords, IM client and contacts, email client, cookies and custom settings) for use on other computers. Saving your personal data to an external drive can be an excellent protection against unauthorized access as can the available encryption.

The USB 2.0 (480Mb/s) interface delivers a reasonably fast data transfer rate. For convenience there is a FreeAgent Desktop Dock which is a good idea if you are going to be taking this portable unit to work with you each day. There is also a travel case for protection while in transit.

It’s certainly worth noting that the Seagate FreeAgent Go has a very generous 5 year limited warranty.

Seagate Manager Software

The preloaded Seagate Manager software provides various configuration scenarios to back up your files to your FreeAgent external HDD. Restoring a file you have lost or has been corrupted from your FreeAgent is a simple task. For increased data security, you can back up your files to an encrypted folder. Folder encryption uses AES 256-bit encryption to ensure your private files can’t be accessed without your encryption password.

It’s possible to save up to 10 previous or historical versions of each revised file. Something many professionals will appreciate. You can restore a saved historical version of a backed-up file based on the date it was last modified, or you can restore the file’s most recent version.

Using Seagate Manager’s Sync functionality you can easily keep important files up to date in multiple locations. Once a folder is selected for synchronizing, whenever any files change or are added inside your folder, they are automatically copied to your FreeAgent drive. To make moving between computers more convenient you can even synchronize folders between different computers. Unfortunately, you can’t synchronize between PCs running XP and Vista.

Synchronized files can automatically encrypted to keep them secure as you synchronize them between computers.
