Western Digital My Book Essential Edition 160GB, 320GB, 500GB, 750GB and 1 TB USB 2.0 External Hard Drive Review

The Western Digital My Book Essential Edition external hard disk drive is the entry level model in Western Digital’s My Book range. The My Book Essential is an excellent platform for storage of data files, music, photos and video. Looking like a book when standing upright on a desk, the drive has a comparatively small footprint (they can be stacked on their side also).

Western Digital My Book Essential Edition External Hard Drive

The Western Digital My Book Essential Edition comes in 5 capacities which should cover the needs of most users;

  • 160GB WDG1U1600N,
  • 320GB WDG1U3200N,
  • 500GB WDG1U5000N,
  • 750GB WDG1U7500N and
  • 1 TB WDH1U10000.

Setup is as simple as it’s plug-and-play and after connecting it with the included USB 2.0 cable it will be instantly recognized by the operating system. The external drive comes pre-formatted for FAT32 for recognition by Windows 2000/XP/Vista and Mac OS X 10.4.8 or later. The drive can be reformatted if necessary (eg. larger file sizes).

Western Digital have designed the My Book Essential Edition to turn itself on and off with your personal computer to maximize energy efficiency.

For the technically minded and those who like to compare figures;

  • Serial Bus Transfer Rate (USB 2.0) 480 Mbits/s (Max) and
  • Read Seek Time - 8.9 ms Track-To-Track Seek Time - 2.0 ms (average).

Those considering purchasing the My Book Essential Edition should note that it does not come with software for automatic backup. It does however, come with free Google software that searches your drives, manages your photos, and simplifies Web searches.
